Not only are we from different worlds, but we existed worlds apart when we met in Berlin.
Jan is the straight thinking mathematician and Xiao Ai the creative artist and designer. Jan relaxes by competing on the sports fields and Xiao Ai competes in beauty contest.
Our relationship was a hilarious journey of misunderstandings and misinterpretations at first. We couldn’t quite understand each other most of the time and found each others customs and behaviours so strange. Until our common interests brought us together. We started cooking together, went sightseeing, partied together and took up photography as a hobby.
And somehow our worlds merged. Xiao Ai found a love for numbers and even enrolled to study mathematics, and Jan joined Xiao Ai in writing music and songs. It wasn’t too long, when we realized that we didn’t want to be without each others ‘strangenesses’.
We wanted to get married on a Greek island and chose Paros because we just loved the way it looked and could picture ourselves having a relaxed and good time there. When we arrived a few days before our wedding, it was the first time we visited the island. Now it’s a place we will never forget.
Enjoy our wedding story.
Having memories of our wedding on Paros that were captured in an artistic but still dreamy and natural way was very important to us.
Mimmika & Carolina say:
We closely guided Xiao Ai and Jan through the process of choosing a photographer especially as they had some very specific ideas in mind. Their wedding was a day full of activity, and they had their heart set on an underwater shoot and a honeymoon shoot too during their stay. We shared a list of all our recommended photographers with them to ensure they felt comfortable with the range of options available to them. For this unique day they would need someone sporty, with stamina and who would be up for an adventure.
Thanos Asfis was the obvious choice, and they couldn’t have been more thrilled with their photos.
I found the idea of having my hair and makeup done quite stressful. i didn't want to be too done up. In the end the result was exactly what I wanted.
Mimmika & Carolina say:
Xiao Ai really was very worried and we had many conversations about this during our planning sessions to make sure she stayed at ease. She wanted to feel like herself on her wedding day and nothing like the persona she steps into when doing her beauty pageants. Understandably, many brides feel unsettled about their bridal hair and makeup, it’s the one detail that can’t be finalized from a distance.
We helped Xiao Ai select a beauty team that we know are excellent in achieving a bridal glow, without overdoing it. We arranged extended trials for her with Sofia her makeup artist and Flora her hairstylist in the days before the wedding, so she had plenty of time to experiment and decide on her look for her special day. After trying many different hairstyles and makeup looks, the moment she tried on her wedding dress during the last trial the beauty team glanced at each other, smiled quietly and we knew something special was about to happen. When they were done, Xiao Ai looked spectacular, and it all fell into place. Most importantly, she felt beautiful, comfortable and the best version of herself on her wedding day.
Our little slice of heaven, where we stayed and both got ready for our wedding day.
Right on the water, near the wedding ceremony and walking distance to picturesque Naoussa, Xiao Ai and their guests enjoyed every moment of their stay. Their ceremony was early morning at 9h30, and the hotel went out of its way to ensure they had delicious treats to snack on while they were getting ready, and a special early breakfast on their wedding day.
Happy, pretty, colourful. I wanted our wedding day to be sweet and full of life, because this is how we felt inside. We didn't even look at what wedding trends were popular because that didn't matter to us. As long as there were sweet colours everywhere we were happy!
We had so much fun setting up this wedding. An early morning setup, sun coming up, barefoot in the sand. It was an enjoyable day filled with laughs.
We kept a soft romantic feel to the flowers, so the colourful nature of the theme wouldn’t ‘run away’ with the day and distract. Our brief was clear, candy colours everywhere, happy, sweet and almost childlike. During a period where everyone was inlove with burlap and we were using a lot of herbs and wild rustic plants in our styling, this felt wonderful to create.
Xiao Ai & Jan ordered extra boutonnieres for the men and flower crowns for the ladies so their guests would feel extra special. They where displayed on arrival at the ceremony for guests to take, while being serenaded with instrumental Greek music.
You make me happy everyday. And now I'll make you happy for the rest of our lives.
Jan, the very serious straight talking mathematician melted us all with the romantic words he wanted to include in their ceremony.
We performed the symbolic ceremony, wrote the script for them and with Jan’s help personalized it so that it resonated with them and reflected who they are as a couple. The ceremony was funny, emotional and full of heart. It’s the only morning ceremony we’ve done, and the coolness, silence and privacy that time of the day created a light and airy atmosphere, setting up the rest of the day perfectly.
Our rings on the starfish was such a nice surprise and it really made us smile.
Real talk. Xiao Ai and Jan’s rings on the starfish was a surprise to us too!
When the rings arrived we realized we hadn’t brought any alternative ring presentation boxes with us for the setup. So we rummaged through our decor kit and found this little gem. Sometimes the sweetest details work out to be the unplanned ones.
We both love music and it's one of the things that brought us together. The local musicians were great, and such nice people too.
We are blessed on Paros to have many talented musicians that play a number of different instruments. Asterios on bouzouki and Nikos on guitar added the Greek touch that Xiao Ai & Jan wanted as part of their ceremony in the most authentic way.
Champagne in the morning is a special treat for us. And we wanted to make sure our guests had something delicious and local to nibble on throughout the day.
We arranged a light buffet of locally made Greek pastries, olives, and dips with fresh homemade lemonade and of course, champagne flowing. Guests were served, so even though they were barefoot on the beach by this point, it felt like the special occasion that is was.
We wanted our wedding day to be so much more than a ceremony, dinner and party. We wanted it to be a whole day of fun and celebrating.
Xiao Ai and their guests walked over to a renovated traditional fishing boat (‘kaiki’) that was waiting for them in the marina and they spent the rest of the day touring around the seas of Paros. There are a number of amazing boat trips and excursions available on Paros. We chose this one for Xiao Ai and Jan as all the food served is made by the captain and his wife, with produce from their own garden. Boat trips are a great way for guests to bond as a welcome event in the days before the wedding. Or if you’re a couple that needs some quiet time together after days of celebrating, there are options for the two of you to escape for a few hours, or even for a few days.
The setting of our wedding reception was beautiful. Good service, excellent Greek seafood and a warm and friendly feel is what we wanted our guests to experience as our thank you to them. And it was so much better than what we expected.
As Xiao Ai and Jan had their private moment on the beach earlier in the day, they were up for a bustling Greek Island experience for the evening celebrations. So we put them in the heart of Naoussa’s ‘limanaki’. Surrounded by restaurants, bars, people and nightlife, it’s island life at its best.
Normally we would share a selection of venues for a couple to choose from and then start working on the wedding menu with the, but with a clear brief of what they wanted to experience and within a budget they had in mind we had the perfect location in mind. We presented the restaurant and a number menu options too them straight away and though we did share a list of alternatives, our recommendation hit all their pleasure sensors and they chose to look no further.
We laughed so much. Our fun sea themed wedding cake, silly props and traditional games. Why take life so seriously?
Ah yes, the sea themed cake. How to make it fun, tongue in cheek and still be elegant? We asked a local patissierie and cake decorator to work together to help create this, and they did a super job getting the balance just right. And the lemon flavoured sponge cake was perfect for after a seafood meal. Once the reception was in flow, we stepped aside and watched the couple and their guest bubbling with laughter all night. An awesome video projection created by their friends, traditional games involving plastic bread items and lots of beer, and a surprise by the couple performing one of the songs they wrote as the sun set. Even after a full day, spirits had not wavered even the slightest.
We imagined our wedding ending like our clubnights in Berlin. And it did, only with some special wishes added too.
Guessing what will get a mixed nationality guest list dancing is one of the hardest task. And especially with smaller weddings, if the party falls flat it’s that much more noticeable. DJ Costa is a master at reading the crowd, testing what get’s everyone up and adjusting as the night goes on. He felt like the right option for Xiao Ai and Jan and we introduced him to them. They loved him and as Costa is a fellow musician too as well as a dj, they had plenty to talk about. On the wedding night he kept guests young and old, from near and far dancing to the early hours, and everyone had a blast!
Exhausted, but so content. We remember that feeling well.
Xiao Ai and Jan’s wedding day was certainly one to remember.
What stayed with us was best said in their own words: ‘Why take life so seriously?’ They reminded us how love and joy are the two most important ingredients for a perfect day. We all felt it emanate from them and we saw how every vendor that worked on their day reflected that back to them too.
But their wedding experience wasn’t over…
Going live in the next days, their underwater and honeymoon shoot!
